At this weekend’s New York Comic Con, Star Trek: Prodigy made headlines by releasing a mid-season trailer and announcing the presence of a heritage character from Star Trek: The Next Generation. During Paramount’s Star Trek panel, the forthcoming season of Picard received the majority of the attention, but Kevin and Dan Hageman, the producers of Prodigy, also seemed to be hinting towards the return of a Star Trek Enterprise captain.
According to a report from Trek Movie, they disclosed that actor Ronny Cox, who played Edward Jellico (a former Enterprise captain), will reprise his role as a recurring character in subsequent episodes of the first season. On October 27, Paramount+ will premiere the second part of the animated children’s programme.
Fans may recognise Captain Edward Jellico as the Star Trek officer who featured in two episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation’s sixth season; he will now be an Admiral in the Prodigy series. Captain Jean-Luc Picard had been captured by the Cardassians when he assumed command of the Enterprise and led an attack against them.
Because of Commander Will Riker’s (Jonathan Frakes) blatant mutiny against him, he was removed of command and replaced by Commander Date. His hard-edged, no-nonsense manner did not endear him to the Star Trek: Next Generation crew (or to Trekkers, for that matter) (Brent Spiner). Fans are most familiar with the episodes (“Chain of Command, Parts I and II”) as the “There are four lights” episode, in which Picard is tortured until he confesses to something he knows to be false.
In his long and illustrious career in Hollywood, Ronny Cox has played figures of authority frequently in Deliverance, Taps, Beverly Hills Cop, RoboCop (as the evil CEO of OCP), Total Recall, and Stargate SG-1, among other classic movies and TV shows. He became a fan favourite during his remarkable (albeit brief) debut on Star Trek: The Next Generation as the captain of the Enterprise, as his two episodes rank among the most popular and well-received of the whole series.
The 84-year-old native of New Mexico has also had prominent appearances in HBO’s True Detective, Leverage, Dexter, and The Starter Wife. He will next be seen in the sci-fi picture Demon Star, which is being made independently.
Ronny Cox spoke about his career and the moment he took over as captain of the Enterprise from Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) in an interview with the official Star Trek website in 2019. I adored the script… Cox, one of the few non-regular performers to ever voice a captain’s log entry on The Next Generation, said of his experience, “I liked doing the programme.
Cox doesn’t act much these days—his last significant role was on a season of Nashville in 2018 and he had a minor part in the Amazon Prime movie Being the Ricardos from the previous year—as he would rather tour and sing his folk music, which was always his first passion.
Along with Brett Gray (Dal), Ella Purnell (Gwyn), Rylee Alazraqui (Rok-Tahk), Angus Imrie (Zero), Jason Mantzoukas (Jankom Pog), Dee Bradley Baker (Murf), John Noble (The Diviner), and Jimmi Simpson, Kate Mulgrew voices Hologram Kathryn Janeway in Star Trek: Prodigy (Drednok)
