PHOENIX: According to police, a former University of Arizona student was detained on Wednesday following a shooting at the Tucson, Arizona, campus that claimed the life of a professor.
A University of Arizona professor was shot on campus, according to authorities; an ex-student was taken into custody.
When someone within the Harshbarger Building, which houses the Department of Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences, called campus police at about 2:00 p.m., they asked them to escort a former student out of the structure. This is when the incident started.
According to campus police chief Paula Balafas, officers were already en route when they learned of a gunshot that had left one person hurt and that the shooter had escaped.
The man was taken to the hospital by firefighters, where medical personnel declared him dead. There were no other recorded injuries.
Few hours after the shooting, Murad Dervish, 46, was detained by Arizona state troopers in a car about 120 miles northwest of the Tucson campus, according to Balafas.
Despite Balafas’ refusal to name the victim, she did reveal that he was a hydrology professor. She did not know the professor’s past with Dervish, who brandished a firearm, but she did establish that Dervish was formerly one of the professor’s students.
We feel so terrible for the professor’s friends, family, and coworkers. During a press conference, Balafas remarked, “Our hearts simply go out to them. It’s just one of those things that is occasionally unpredictable.
All in-person courses at the University of Arizona were cancelled for the rest of the school day after campus notifications were sent to students about a shooting that took place in the John W. Harshbarger building on the university’s main campus in Tucson.
Under order to prevent individuals from entering the facility, which was in lockdown, university police closed off the area around the Harshbarger building. Just to the northwest of the student union and university bookshop lies the building where the shooting took place.
According to Balafas, classes will resume on Thursday, although it’s possible that the shooting scene’s building won’t be open.
This month marks the 20th anniversary of the murder of three nursing instructors by a dissatisfied University of Arizona nursing student, who then committed himself.
