Due to a problem that might make drivers lose control of their cars, Rivian has informed customers that it is recalling 13,000 EVs, or nearly all of the electric trucks and SUVs it has ever shipped.
According to Bloomberg and The Wall Street Journal, the firm initiated the recall after learning of seven complaints indicating that a bolt connecting the steering knuckle to the vehicle’s upper control arm “may not have been appropriately torqued.”
Despite the low number of reported faults, Chief Executive Officer RJ Scaringe stated in the letter to consumers that the business is recalling vehicles “out of an excess of caution.”
Although there had been no reports of injuries associated with the problem, he said the fastener may come free in “rare situations” and result in loss of steering control.
Rivian now offers the R1T truck and the R1S SUV as its two available models, but in its facility in Normal, Illinois, the company also manufactures electric delivery vehicles for its minority owner Amazon.
Like other companies in the auto and IT sectors, its production capacity was hampered by the problems with the global supply chain during the previous several years.
Due to inflation and component shortages, it even attempted to increase the price of its R1T pickup vehicle by $12,000 earlier this year. However, it swiftly changed its mind in response to negative consumer feedback.
The carmaker said in July 2022 that it had nearly quadrupled its production output for the second quarter of the year compared to the first, at 4,401 automobiles.
Even while it’s a small portion of other automakers’ output — competitor business Tesla, for instance, produced 258,580 EVs in the same time frame — it’s a step in the right direction towards the company’s aim of building 25,000 vehicles by the year 2022.
The carmaker hopes that it can inspect all impacted cars within 30 days, and this recall isn’t anticipated to stop it from achieving that objective.
Customers may bring their cars to repair facilities to have the fasteners adjusted there in a matter of minutes, according to Rivian.
